Your Union Stands With You

Being separated from federal service through a RIF is a difficult experience, but it does not mean you lose access to union support. AFGE Local 2883 is committed to helping affected employees through the transition and beyond. Many union benefits and services continue after your separation date, and some are specifically designed for members going through the RIF process.

Benefits That Continue After Separation

Legal Representation for Appeals

If you were a dues-paying member at the time of your RIF notice, AFGE will continue to represent you in any RIF-related legal proceedings, including:

  • Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB) appeals
  • Grievances filed under the collective bargaining agreement
  • Unfair labor practice complaints before the FLRA
  • EEO complaints related to the RIF action
  • Arbitration proceedings

This representation continues until your case is fully resolved, regardless of how long the process takes.

Union Insurance Programs

AFGE members have access to several insurance programs that may continue after separation, depending on the specific plan:

  • AFGE Group Life Insurance: May be converted to an individual policy within 31 days of separation
  • AFGE Accident Insurance: Coverage may continue if you maintain your AFGE membership
  • Union Plus Benefits: Various discount programs available to all AFGE members, including those in retired or separated status

Career Transition Support

AFGE provides career transition resources for separated members, including:

  • Resume review and federal application assistance
  • Information about federal rehirement programs (RPL, CTAP, ICTAP)
  • Networking opportunities with other AFGE locals and councils
  • Job fair notifications and career workshop announcements

Advocacy and Legislative Support

AFGE continues to advocate on behalf of RIF'd employees at the national level. This includes lobbying Congress for funding restoration, challenging improper RIF actions through legislative channels, and pushing for stronger worker protections in future workforce restructuring.

How Long Do Benefits Last?

Legal Representation

Continues until all pending cases are resolved, as long as you were a member in good standing when the RIF notice was issued. There is no time limit on this benefit for cases arising from the RIF.

Insurance Programs

Coverage periods vary by plan. Most plans allow a conversion period of 31 days after separation. Contact your plan administrator for specific details.

Union Plus Benefits

Continue as long as you maintain your AFGE membership. These include discounts on travel, education, and consumer services.

Career Support

Available as long as you remain a member. AFGE Local 2883 will continue to provide support through your job search and transition.

Maintaining Your Union Membership After Separation

Important: Your union dues are deducted from your federal paycheck. When your federal employment ends, dues deductions will stop automatically. However, you can continue your AFGE membership by switching to direct payment.

To maintain your membership after separation:

  1. Contact AFGE Local 2883 before your separation date to arrange for continued membership
  2. Complete a direct payment authorization form to pay dues via credit card, debit card, or bank draft
  3. Update your contact information with the local so we can continue to reach you
  4. Consider retiree membership if you are eligible for retirement — AFGE has a retiree membership category with reduced dues
